A Fine Set of 19th-Century Japanese Imari Plates | c.1850–1870

A Fine Set of 19th-Century Japanese Imari Plates | c.1850–1870

A beautifully crafted set of antique Japanese Imari plates, dating from the mid-19th century, circa 1850–1870. Rich in colour and decoration, these plates display the confident balance of cobalt blue, iron red and delicate gilding that has made Imari ware so enduringly desirable.

Produced for both domestic use and export, pieces of this quality were prized for their decorative appeal as much as their practicality. The hand-painted motifs remain crisp and lively, offering a wonderful glimpse into traditional Japanese ceramic artistry of the period.

The plates are in good antique condition, showing light, honest signs of use and age. One plate has a small chip to the rim — clearly visible in the photographs — which is entirely in keeping with objects of this age and does not detract from their overall presence or charm.
